Stark County Historical Society

Travel with us to nearby Toulon to explore the Stark
County Historical Society, a museum complex
that houses a wealth of intriguing buildings and
exhibits. We’ll see Dr. Hall’s of昀ce (believed to
be Illinois’ 昀rst doctor’s of昀ce), a Victorian home
featuring beautiful stained glass and a Civil War
display, and an ag building that houses a large
artifact collection of agricultural equipment
and other items used by Stark County pioneers
from 1829-1900. We9ll also learn about the 1858
campaign stop by Stephen Douglas and Abraham
Lincoln, who spoke to enthusiastic crowds.

exhibition, Finding Titanic: The Secret Mission
at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, created by
legendary explorer Dr. Bob Ballard. Discover the
now-declassi昀ed story behind Ballard’s secret
Cold War mission and his historic 1985 discovery of
the Titanic wreck. Experience interactive displays
and rare artifacts that bring this groundbreaking
maritime adventure to life. Thanks to the support
of anonymous donors, OLLI is a proud co-sponsor
of this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit.

LEARNING TRIPS
Distillery Labs
Friday, October 17

Distillery Labs is working to connect people,
ideas, and resources to launch and grow new
businesses in the Greater Peoria community.
Doug Cruitt, Executive Director at Distillery Labs
and af昀liate Instructor at Bradley University, will
give us a private tour of the newly-renovated
location featuring 40,000 square feet of space
in the former Illinois Central College building
on Southwest Adams. The renovated building
will house a world-class startup and technology
incubation center complete with public education
and training facilities, of昀ces and coworking areas,
and maker spaces including a commercial test
kitchen, cut-and-sew, and prototyping equipment.

Dirksen Congressional Center

Learn about the latest developments at The
Dirksen Congressional Center with executive
director Tiffany White and historian Chris
Kaergard. Named for Everett McKinley Dirksen
(1896 - 1969), the Pekin-based nonpro昀t, nonpartisan organization promotes research and
scholarship about the U.S. Congress. We9ll talk
about Sen. Dirksen9s legacy as we mark the 60th
anniversary of his work passing the 1965 Voting
Rights Act and the 50th anniversary of the Dirksen
Center. Our behind-the-scenes tour will feature
rarely seen artifacts including a signed copy of the
1964 Civil Rights Act and correspondence with
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights
leaders. We9ll also discuss a new project to make
their archives more publicly accessible.
