Vivandière, Spies, Nurses and Others: Women9s
Roles in the American Civil War
Delve into the diverse roles women played
during the American Civil War, moving beyond
traditional battle昀eld narratives to uncover the
critical contributions of women on both sides of
the con昀ict. From nurses, spies, vivandières, and
camp followers to abolitionists and even disguised
female soldiers, women shaped the war9s course
and legacy in ways too often overlooked. We will
begin with the U.S. Sanitary Commission, staffed
with women who provided services and provisions
to the troops. We will spotlight well-known
昀gures such as Clara Barton and Harriet Tubman,
as well as the stories of lesser known but equally
courageous women, such as Susie King Taylor
and Kady Brownwell. We will also cover African
American women9s experiences as they faced both
racial injustice and war.
