Many of the greatest American 昀lms re昀ect the
socio-cultural conditions of their time and their
unique place in history. During the 20th century,
these 昀lms were shown exclusively in lavish movie
theaters, which served as central gathering places
for people of all ages. This shared experience
helped us navigate signi昀cant events like the
Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the
Vietnam War. We’ll explore selected 昀lms from
each decade between 1930 and 1970, examining
them within their historical and socio-cultural
contexts to see how they captured their times.
Among the 昀lms we’ll discuss are Modern Times,
The Best Years of Our Lives, On the Waterfront,
To Kill A Mockingbird, and Saturday Night Fever.
So, buckle-up and join us as we ponder 昀ying
monkeys, storm the beaches, build fallout shelters,
share a train with four lads from Liverpool, and
debate the merits of disco. It will be groovy!
$45 3 Facilitated by frequent OLLI facilitators and
昀lm buffs Tim Burns, Gary Nelson, Denise Hocker,
Paul Resnick, and Randy Wilson. (RFs/NG)
