Being Mortal:
Talking About the Hard Stuff
Wednesdays, March 4 – 25
2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Methodist College
Perhaps without fully realizing it, we in the United
States are fortunate to have many healthcare
experts who write clearly and thoughtfully about
issues that affect us all. Atul Gawande, MD, a
professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School,
is one of them. In Being Mortal, his most recent
book, Gawande reflects on an era in which the
relationship between doctor and patient is
“increasingly miscast in retail terms.” He asks how
difficult it is for doctors—trained to solve problems
and to succeed—to acknowledge when no cure
is possible. Even more poignantly, he asks how
many physicians, accustomed to telling patients
how to live, are prepared to talk with them about
how to die. Our group will meet with students
from Methodist College enrolled in a gerontology
course to explore Being Mortal alongside
additional resources to deepen our understanding
of the profound intimacy of life’s final stage.

The West Wing Myth and Reality, Part II
Tuesdays, March 3 – March 31
1:30 – 3:45 p.m.
Peoria Next Innovation Center
The West Wing was an acclaimed American
political drama that illustrated thorny political
issues, national crises and moral conundrums,
such as the limits of executive power, the role
of the media and the election process. In
each session, we will watch one episode from
the second season of the series together to
be followed by a wide-ranging discussion on
issues raised in that episode. We will analyze
whether the issues were presented fairly, how the
characters responded and whether real-world
policies were reflected in the program's plotlines.
Please join us for a fun and thought provoking five
weeks!
