Jeanette Rankin was a suffragist, peace activist,
workers’ rights advocate, and champion of
democratic reform. She ran for Congress twice as
a Republican and was elected 34 years apart—a
remarkable achievement. Rankin remained
faithful to her beliefs, no matter the personal
cost, even while serving within what was then
the largest “old boys’ club” in America. She was
the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress.
Rankin voted against U.S. entry into both World
War I and World War II; during the latter, she
was the only member of Congress to oppose
going to war with Japan. During her first term,
she introduced legislation that later became the
19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting
women the right to vote. We'll learn more about
this pioneering woman as we read and discuss
