The Great Depression and FDR’s New Deal:
A Nation in Crisis
Thursdays, April 30 – May 28
9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Goodwill Commons
What caused the Great Depression, the most
severe economic crisis in American history, and
how did Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal respond
to it? In this group, we will examine the economic,
political, and social factors that led to the Great
Depression, including financial speculation,
structural weaknesses in the economy, and
global economic forces. We will then explore the
goals, programs, and controversies of the New
Deal, considering how FDR’s policies reshaped
the role of the federal government and affected
everyday life for Americans. Through discussion
and historical analysis, we will assess both the
achievements and the limitations of the New Deal
and its lasting impact on American society.
$45 – Facilitated by John Cummings, former
history teacher and frequent OLLI facilitator.
