What is a Concerto?
What is a Concerto? The noun comes from
the Italian verb concertare: 1) to compete 2) to
cooperate. Yes there are two definitions that
seem to oppose each other. And, that is what a
concerto is. There is lots of competition between
soloist(s) and the ensemble. And there is lots
of cooperation between the soloist(s) and the
ensemble. We'll explore compositions that bring
us both these qualities and much more. Starting
in the 17th Century we'll experience concerti from
baroque, classical, romantic and modern styles.
There is never a dull moment in a concerto, so join
us for an exciting musical journey.
$30 – Class Instructor is Michael Dicker, Emeritus
Professor of Bassoon, Illinois State University and
