Breaking the Surface: Female Marine Scientists
and their Deep Sea Discoveries
Writer Zora Neale Hurston called research
“organized curiosity.” Throughout history, the
ocean has been a constant subject of curiosity,
speculation, and imagination because until very
recently, it has been all but inaccessible. Water
covers 70% of the earth, yet we know more about
surfaces of other planets than we do about the
seafloor. In this class, we will encounter the work
of several scientists who have peeled back layers
of that mystery to reveal incredible discoveries
across a range of fields such as marine biology,
hydrology, geochemistry, coastal ecology, animal
behavior and cognition, and marine engineering
and technology. Across four sessions, we will cover
notable trailblazers, as well as lesser-known figures
whose insights have changed the way we think of
the ocean and its systems.
$30 – Class instructor is Kathryn Eissfeldt, an
educator and freelance science writer, Past
President of Peoria Area World Affairs Council, and
frequent OLLI instructor.
