The Underground Railroad:
A Journey to Freedom
Some 昀椀ve hundred years ago, ships captained by
Europeans began transporting enslaved Africans
across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas, the
昀椀rst one reaching Virginia in 1619. Many of the
enslaved African-Americans attempted to free
themselves from bondage whenever possible.
Courageous Americans who opposed slavery
helped enslaved individuals reach freedom. In this
class we will explore the history of the network
of secret routes and safe houses used by the
freedom-seekers that became known as "The
Underground Railroad." Everyone has heard about

The Harpers Ferry Raid:
John Brown, Ardent Abolitionist
In 1859, passionate abolitionist John Brown
plotted to free enslaved people in Virginia and
settle them in a colony in the Appalachian
Mountains. After a history of violence to promote
abolition in Kansas in 1856, he and his followers
undertook a daring raid on the federal arsenal in
Harpers Ferry, Virginia, to obtain weapons to carry
out his plan. This raid, considered one of the key
events leading to the U.S. Civil War, failed and
yielded many questions: Why did some friends
refuse to participate? Who were the “Secret
Six” who provided 昀椀nancial support? Why were
the New England intellectuals supportive at the
time? History has, for the most part, treated
Brown like a martyr rather than like a villain, and
we will explore why.
