Fox River Trolley Museum
Peoria’s Electric Rails - A Forgotten Era
Tuesday, January 20
12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
It may surprise some to learn that Illinois once
boasted one of the 昀椀nest electric transportation
systems in the country. From 1907 into the 1950s,
Peoria was a key stop on the Illinois Traction
line, an electric railroad that carried passengers
across downstate Illinois. Join historian Doug
Rundell with the Fox River Trolley Museum,
for a fascinating presentation on the history of
Peoria-area electric trolleys. He’ll also touch brie昀氀y
on some other unique trolley lines, re昀氀ecting
the creativity, imagination, and diversity of
the interurban railroad industry of more than
a century ago. While Chicago dominated
interurban trolley history, Peoria was also a key
rail hub, with lines connecting communities and
carrying both passengers and freight. At the
turn of the century, these trolleys were essential,
making unscheduled stops on private property
and delivering goods with remarkable speed, a
precursor to modern package services. Discover
how these trolleys shaped transportation,
commerce, and everyday life in central Illinois from
their peak through the mid-20th century.
