winter program that features two lectures and
an opportunity to gather as a community in the
new year

9:00 – 10:30 a.m. | 60 Years of the Voting
Rights Act: From Bipartisan Achievement to
Courtroom Debate
Marking its 60th anniversary, the Voting
Rights Act of 1965 has undergone signi昀椀cant
change, including a case being re-heard by
the Supreme Court this term. Chris Kaergard,
communications manager and historian at The
Dirksen Congressional Center, will discuss the
history of this landmark legislation, highlighting
advocacy by Peoria-area citizens and U.S.
Senator Everett Dirksen. He’ll also examine
recent efforts to limit or expand its protections,
providing insight into the current state of voting
rights and what they mean for our participation
at the ballot box.

Lifelong Learning: ChatGPT, NotebookLM,
and Beyond
Curious about how Arti昀椀cial Intelligence
can support your learning journey? Angel
Chatterton, Senior Instructor of Accountancy at
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
will take us on a friendly tour through some of
today’s most exciting AI tools. We’ll start with
ChatGPT, a conversational AI that can answer
questions, explain complex ideas, and even help
brainstorm creative projects. Then, we’ll explore
Google’s NotebookLM, a new tool designed to
help organize your notes, connect ideas, and
make learning more engaging. Along the way,
we’ll look at other recent advancements and
share practical examples of how these tools can
spark curiosity, make research easier, and open
up new ways to keep learning at any age. No
technical background is required - just bring
your curiosity!
