January 22, 1879: The Empire’s Longest Day
Thursdays, January 7 – 28
1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Peoria Next Innovation Center
The Empire’s Longest Day is for history buffs and
movie lovers alike. Explore the Anglo-Zulu War
through two classic British films, Zulu Dawn and
Zulu. One depicts the British defeat at Isandlwana;
the other tells the story of a small British force
defending Rorke’s Drift against a much larger Zulu
army. How closely do the films follow history? Over
four sessions, we’ll explore the history, compare the
films, and discuss the recommended book Zulu
Rising by Ian Knight and a required 60-page study
guide developed by Peter following his visits to the
battlefields. We’ll also examine what happened to
the heroes, survivors, and actors—including Peter
O’Toole, Burt Lancaster, Michael Caine, and Stanley
Baker—and consider two provocative quotes:
“Politicians can spoil a good peace; generals
can ruin a good war” and “Total war is okay—in
moderation.”
$45 – Facilitated by Peter Barclay, an amateur
historian, movie lover, and OLLI volunteer who has
visited battlefields across North America, Europe,
and Africa and enjoys exploring history from the
soldier’s perspective.

Using AI Tools
Mondays, January 11 – February 15
1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
We hear that AI is everywhere and can do almost
anything—but what can it really do, and how
can we use it? Let’s find out through hands-on
experience. This group will meet weekly online.
Between meetings, participants will spend 2–3
hours exploring free AI tools and practicing with
chatbots, image and video creation, and more.
During our online meetings, we’ll learn about
different AI tools, share experiences, and compare
results. By the end of the course, participants
will have tried a variety of tools, learned from
one another’s experiences, and gained a better
understanding of how chatbots work. Participants
should try ChatGPT and Google Gemini before the
first meeting.
$45 – Facilitated by Walter Urbaniak, a retired
computer network engineer and information
security architect.
