History of Mathematics
Explore how mathematics evolved as people
searched for easier, faster, and more useful ways
to solve problems. We’ll look at why Roman
numerals gave way to more practical number
systems, how exponents simplified complex
calculations, and how tools such as the abacus
and early calculating machines changed the way
people worked with numbers. Along the way, we’ll
trace developments from ancient mathematics
to Pascal, Leibniz, modern calculators, and today’s
computers and smartphones—while asking not
only when and how these advances happened,
but why they mattered and what might have
happened without them.
$15 – Class instructor is Mary Jane Sterling,
emeritus math instructor at Bradley University
and frequent OLLI instructor.
Unlocking the Mysteries of Color, Part 2 of 3
Continue exploring the science of color with a
closer look at how colors are created, mixed, and
reproduced. We’ll examine subtractive primary
colors—cyan, magenta, and yellow—and see how
they are used in inks, paints, and color printing.
Along the way, we’ll explore CMYK printing,
halftones, spot colors, painters’ traditional redyellow-blue color wheel, complementary colors,
and why colors can appear different under
changing light. Part 3 will follow in February. Part
1 is available on YouTube for anyone who did not
take it last winter.
$15 – Class instructor is Walter Urbaniak, a retired
computer network engineer with an interest in
science.
